Baseball Completes Series Sweep Of Alcorn

The Jackson State University baseball team completed a three-game weekend sweep of Alcorn on Sunday with 14-3 win at Braddy Field.

Kenneth Bell III hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, one of 11 JSU hits in the contest. JSU combined for 39 runs in 33 hits in the non-conference series.

On the mound, Nikelle Galatas (1-0) earned his first win of the season, allowing five hits, two runs, walking one, and striking out seven. JSU pitching was dominant over the weekend, allowing only five runs and 16 hits, while striking out 33 Alcorn hitters.

"It's hard to beat anybody three times, but we were fortunate enough to play well against Alcorn," said Jackson State head coach Omar Johnson. "We pitched really well this weekend, only allowing five runs in the three games. When your pitchers perform like that, it makes it easy for everyone else."

The Tigers (8-5) scored in each of the first three innings to take control. With one out, Ty Hill singled through the left side, and moved to second on a walk to El'Rico Riley. With two outs, Devontae Rhodes singled up the middle, scoring Hill. Riley later scored on wild pitch to give JSU a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Omar Gomez-Rivera walked, and Colby Guy singled to lead off the inning. Jatavis Melton then beat out a bunt single down the third base line, and Gomez-Rivera scored on a throwing error on the play for a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning following a walk to Riley, the Tigers executed the double steal with Melton taking home plate and Riley second base for a 4-0 lead.

JSU broke the game open with a five-run third, taking advantage of three errors, one hit batsman, and five walks. Hill's RBI single was the only hit for the Tigers in the inning as they took a 9-0 lead.

Rhodes and Guy each had two hits, with Rhodes driving in three runs. Riley scored three times, while Bell, Gomez-Rivera, and Buy each scored a pair of runs.

JSU returns to action Friday at 2 p.m. in game one of a three-game non-conference series at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
